PETALING JAYA (July 6): The opening of the newly completed 250m Sunway Serene Bridge on Thursday (July 6) marked the final milestone of Sunway Group’s property arm Sunway Property’s RM30 million public upgrading works in Kelana Jaya.

The project, which includes upgrades to the existing road networks, as well as the rehabilitation of the 15-acre Sunway Serene Lake, was done in tandem with its planning for the 17-acre Sunway Serene development, according to Sunway’s press release.

In his opening speech at the media event on Thursday, Sunway Group’s founder and chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah said the successful completion of this project is a testament of the company’s commitment to the Kelana Jaya community. “This community initiative is our pledge to place the interests of our communities at the forefront of our business operations. At Sunway, we believe that no corporation can stand apart from the community it serves. You have my word that Sunway will continue to walk the talk in serving the community here.”

Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir, who officiated the opening of the Sunway Serene Bridge, acknowledged Sunway’s tireless efforts to sustainable development. “Sunway Group’s bold commitment to developing smart sustainable cities is aligned with MBPJ’s goal of becoming a low-carbon city, based on the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the 10 themes under the Petaling Jaya Smart, Sustainable and Resilient 2030 Plan (PJSSR 2030).

“With the help of forward-looking corporate citizens, local councils can foster resilience for their communities, while progressing their communities and better manage the challenges brought about by rapid urbanisation and climate change,” he added.

As part of the lake rehabilitation works, the developer has installed floating traps, removed litter from lakes, and planted aquatic plants to help improve water quality, as well as giving a clean and clear surrounding for the residents of Sunway Serene and its neighbouring communities. The developer has also planted around 1,000 trees, preserved 168 trees and transplanted 16 trees during Sunway Serene’s construction, with the aim of achieving a reduction of at least 22,000 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the developer said in its press statement.

Other road upgrades include the construction of a new 1.8-metre (m) width walkway and a new 500m open V-shaped drain along Jalan SS7/1 and Jalan SS 7/3 to ensure smooth drainage; the widening of Jalan SS8/2 from two to three lanes, and lengthening the weaving section between Federal Highway ramp and traffic from Jalan SS7/2 from 20m to 100m. The statement added that the roadworks have alleviated traffic congestions in the area.

Phase 1 of Sunway Serene, comprising 894 units of serviced apartments over two towers, is 97% taken up, to date. The first phase, which has a gross development value of RM1 billion, was completed in January this year and has been handed over to the purchasers. Plans for Phase 2 are underway, according to the developer.

“I am pleased to learn that Petaling Jaya has been among the leading cities in Malaysia to address the challenges of a modern city head-on. The PJSSR 2030 is a progressive and forward-looking blueprint that has our full support here at Sunway,” Cheah said.
