PETALING JAYA (Nov 11): The annual EdgeProp Malaysia’s Best Managed & Sustainable Property Awards 2021 (BMSPA) is back with a new award category specially designed for repurposed buildings.

The newly introduced awards’ category is “Repurposed Building”, which recognises the recycled old buildings, or adaptive reuse to extend the usefulness of a building by changing its function while keeping the structure.

EdgeProp.my unveiled the details of the new awards category in today’s BMSPA 2021 virtual briefing sessions.

In light of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) restrictions and overwhelming enquiries, EdgeProp.my has for the first time organised such virtual briefing sessions to the interested joint management bodies and management corporations, renowned developers and professional property management companies.

There were more than 30 participants attending the first two virtual briefing sessions today. Also present were two of the Awards judges - Architect Centre accredited building inspector Anthony Lee Tee and Chur Associates founder and managing partner Chris Tan, as well as the chief judge EdgeProp Malaysia editor-in-chief and managing director Au Foong Yee, to answer to the participants’ queries.

The briefing sessions covered the introduction of the Awards and its purposes, the Awards categories, the judging criteria as well as submission tips and expectations from the judges.

“Moving forward, with more and more strata properties in the market, property management will be an important topic in the future. Therefore, the judges will be interested to know what is so outstanding about your team in maintaining a building.

“I would also like to emphasise that this is not a beauty contest. We are not looking for glamour buildings. We are looking at the building management quality, safety, function and the efforts that the team has put in to make the building be able to stand the test of time,” Au said during the briefing session.

First of its kind awards

Launched in 2017 by EdgeProp Malaysia, it is the first of its kind Awards that recognises real estate that is managed with excellence. The objective of the Awards is to raise the bar on Malaysian property management practices, benchmarking it against the best in class globally.

Coming to its fifth year in 2021, the Awards continues to partner with Nippon Paint Malaysia and supporting partner Panasonic Malaysia. The Awards is also supported by the Singapore Association of Property and Facility Managers (APFM), Architect Centre, the Building Managers Association of Malaysia (BMAM), the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), Malaysian Institute of Professional Facility Managers (MIPFM), the Malaysian REIT Managers Association (MRMA) and the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (Rehda).

There are 10 main categories in BMSPA 2021. Of these, eight categories, which cover residential, office, mixed development retail and sustainable affordable housing, are each sub-divided into two segments to reflect the age of the property (below 10 years or 10 years and above).

On top of that, there are three special categories namely EdgeProp-ILAM Malaysia’s Sustainable Landscape Award, Editor’s Choice Awards and EdgeProp Malaysia’s Responsible Developer: Building Sustainable Development Award 2020.

BMSPA 2021 is calling for entries from now until 5pm, Jan 11, 2021. The submission details and past reports are available here at https://www.edgeprop.my/awards2021entry
