PETALING JAYA (Jan 9): 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama here has been awarded a Platinum certification within the non-residential category by green building certification body GreenRE, according to a press statement issued on Monday (Jan 8).

GreenRE is a green building certification body formed by Malaysia’s Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Rehda) to promote sustainability in Malaysia’s property industry.

“Receiving this award is a testament to our steadfast dedication to sustainability. Our commitment remains resolute, as we continuously invest in cutting-edge green technology and embrace leading practices in conserving energy and water. Our emphasis on active systems not only prioritise occupants’ well-being but also significantly contributes to fostering a low-carbon economy. This recognition further underscores our pride in achieving this prestigious award,” said 1 Utama director Tan Sri Teo Chiang Kok. 

Some of the sustainability features implemented in the shopping centre are ice and chilled water storage systems, building automation system, rainwater harvesting, solar photovoltaic and building-integrated photovoltaic panels, food waste management system called W.I.S.E. with Food, a rooftop garden named The Secret Garden, four-storey rainforest enclave with 100 species of Malaysian forest trees, a one-stop recycling hub called 1RECYLING CENTRE, and a mobile app that gamifies tree planting called ForestONE.

Besides sustainability features, digitalised green technologies have also been incorporated into 1 Utama, such as 1PAY (e-wallet) and ONESHOP (e-commerce platform). 

“Our comprehensive sustainability metrics framework focuses on critical aspects like energy, water, waste and GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, setting science-based targets. Recent initiatives including forging Green Lease Partnerships with tenants, has solidified our commitment toward realising a net-zero mall by 2050,” said 1 Utama public relations and sustainability senior manager Lee Li Lian. 

The Green Lease Partnership encourages tenants to integrate sustainable materials into their fit-outs, operations and retail spaces.
