Illegal granite quarry defies stop-work order

GEORGE TOWN (Oct 11): An illegal quarry in Teluk Bahang is still mining thousands of tonnes of granite despite a stop-work order by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), an online report by The Star said today.

The report said a check on Tuesday saw workers in the quarry and sounds of activity could be heard from 200m away where a school – SJK(C) Eok Hua – is located.

The Star quoted State Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh saying the state would look into it and if work was still being carried out, action would be taken.

“If they are still operating despite the stop-work order, then we need to investigate what they are doing down there, ” he said.

Meanwhile, former Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu questioned the MBPP’s handling of the issue.

He said MBPP should have made sure the quarry had stopped work.

He also said there were two earlier stop-work orders.

The quarry which was supposed to have been shut down in 2002, was operation during a check by The Star on Oct 1, 2019.
