Pulau Carey

Overview

Pulau Carey or Carey Island is a large island of 38,000 acres situated 90 km to the South West of Kuala Lumpur. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Langat River. Back in 1900s it was known as Pulau Si Alang and was inhabited solely by the indigenous Mah Mari, an Orang Asli tribe. Today it is named after the English planter, Edward Valentine John Carey, who acquired it from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sulaiman, to establish rubber plantations. In 1905, rubber was introduced and by 1907 a stable workforce of primarily South Indians had been established. In its present state, a vast proportion of the island is palm oil plantation owned by Sime Darby Plantations and the remaining land is State government land with five Mah Meri settlements and one Kampung Melayu settlement.

Even as the Mah Meri integrated themselves into modern life, they have maintained their traditions and customs. Their unique culture attracts many visitors, especially during April when they celebrate their festival during which you can experience traditional mask dances and music. They are famous for wooden masks and spiritual sculptures, carved from a red swamp hardwood locally known as ‘Nyireh Batu’, sold at the craft centre in Kampung Sungei Bumbun. The images and symbols incorporated in every design embody mythological significances passed down the line from father to son for generations. The Mah Meri Cultural Village exhibits a historical gallery with exquisite carvings and tribal dance and wedding performances if booked in advance.

Places of Attraction

Aside from the Mah Meri, people visit for the mouth-watering seafood offered by popular restaurants like Kang Guan Seafood Restaurant and Langat Seafood Restaurant. The Amverton Cove Golf & Island Resort provides accommodation and many outdoor activities such as 18-hole golfing, archery, ATV, kayaking, rock climbing, flying fox and paddle boating while karaoke, gymnasium, swimming pool and kids’ game room are indoor entertainment. Sime Darby’s West Estate, ‘Heritage Island’ allows public visitation. Inside, is a self-supporting colonial settlement preserved from the time of E.V.J. Carey including his mansion ‘Hatter’s Castle’, a mosque, temple, church, hospital, school and a 9-hole golf course and club house. The beaches of Pulau Carey once had substantial mangrove habitats that protected the shore line but has now dwindled as a result of agricultural land clearing. Attempts at rehabilitating the mangrove population are being made. The main feature of the beach is not for swimming but for harvesting shellfish.

Accessibility and Transportation

The easiest way to access is via the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) which crosses straight into Pulau Carey. You can also drive to Teluk Panglima Garang on the Kelang - Banting road and then cross over the bridge via Jalan Pulau Carey.
