Overview

Kuala Lumpur, home to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and a population of 1.7 million, is Malaysia’s largest city and federal capital. Situated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur means “muddy confluence” in Malay, referring to the point where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet when the city was first founded by Chinese tin miners in 1857. Over the next 150 years, KL has flourished from a tin mining outpost into one of the most vibrant cities in Southeast Asia. Today, KL is a metropolis filled with skyscrapers, a network of integrated transportation systems and modern infrastructure.

As one of the country’s Federal Territories, KL spans an area of 243 km² managed by the KL City Hall and is surrounded by satellite cities within Selangor. Together they are generally referred to as the Klang Valley or Greater KL. As the capital city of Malaysia, KL is also the seat of the Parliament of Malaysia, and the economic and business centre of the country.

At the heart of KL is the Golden Triangle where the city’s CDB, as well as a plethora of shopping, dining and entertainment offerings reside. Apart from the tallest twin towers in the world, KL also hosts a variety of landmarks and places of interest, including the KL Tower, Dataran Merdeka, KL Railway Station and Merdeka Square, to name a few.
