Malacca (Melaka in Malay) is a state along the South western coast of Peninsular Malaysia bordered by the Straits of Malacca. Famous for its rich history, it is called as "The Historic State". Its capital, Malacca City, is a World Heritage City. Unlike most Malaysian States, it does not have a local monarchy so the head of state is a Governor.
The Malacca Sultanate was founded by Iskandar Shah (Parameswara) in the 1400s when he realized the importance of the strategic location of Malacca as an international port for trade. In 1511, Portuguese captured Malacca but were unsuccessful in controlling the Asian trade. After several attempts, the Dutch finally defeated the Portuguese and ruled Malacca until it was ceded to the British East India Company in 1824. Then it became a part of the Straits Settlement in 1826, Crown Colony in 1867, Malayan Union in 1946 and Federation of Malaya in 1948. It gained independence in 1957 and became a state in Malaysia in 1963.
The strength of its economy is based almost entirely on the service sector and manufacturing with a small contribution from agriculture. There are a large number of industrial areas and international factories that employ a huge workforce and produce a lot of goods that support Malacca's economy.
The predominant ethnic group is Malay and Islam is the primary religion. Other ethnic groups include Chinese and Peranakan, Indians and Chitty, Sikhs, Portuguese descendants and indigenous Temuan. The Peranakans have unique culture and crafts such as furniture, porcelain, crockery and food. Those of Portuguese descent celebrate traditional Santa Cruz and Entrudo (water festival marking the beginning of Lent) and also perform traditional Branyu dance. Malaccan Malay is mainly spoken, but English is also widely used among many other minority languages.
Cuisine that must not be missed include Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls – rice boiled in chicken soup and rolled into a ball, Satay Celup – skewered raw and semi-cooked seafood, meat and vegetables dunked into a pot of boiling satay gravy, Cendol – traditional dessert made of coconut milk, green noodles, shaved ice, palm sugar and various add ons and Asam Pedas Fish – spicy and sour fish curry cooked with eggplant, long beans, tomato and tamarind juice.
There are numerous historical sites and buildings that preserve and showcase the rich history of Malacca. Attractions include Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, Chitty Museum, Aborigines Museum, Malay and Islamic World Museum, Christ Church, State Mosque, Saint Paul's Hill, Stadhuys, A'Famosa Resort, Malacca Wonderland, Pirate Park and finally Jonker Walk and Puteri Beach to experience the night markets. Malacca Gateway is a cluster of man-made islands currently under development that is expected to reel in tourists in droves.
