PETALING JAYA (April 5): Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd’s (MRCB) unit MRCB Builders Sdn Bhd will build a cold storage processing and distribution hub in Kajang for national retailing chain Giant.

MRCB Builders signed a RM56.8 million contract to construct the hub with Jupiter Lagoon Sdn Bhd, an associate of GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd that operates Giant supermarkets and hypermarkets.

“We are pleased to be selected as the contractor for this project. We have previously undertaken many projects for the Giant hypermarket network and this is a testament of our ability to deliver projects on budget and on time with enhanced value from the use of new construction technologies,” said MRCB group managing director Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din at the signing ceremony.

The 140,000 sq ft cold storage processing and distribution centre will be built on a five-acre site in Kajang, Selangor and will feature the super flat floor technology pioneered in Australia.

The distribution centre will be built on a 12-month fast track basis and is scheduled for completion in August 2017.

“This new facility will see reduction in logistics cost and deliver the best price to our consumers. It has always been Giant’s promise to offer low prices at the best quality,” said GCH Retail regional director for Malaysia and Brunei Datuk Tim Ashdown.

Previously, MRCB was awarded a RM125 million contract to build Giant’s Sepang distribution centre in 2009, and the facility’s RM30 million phase 2 extension in 2015 by Dairy Farm International Holdings Bhd, the parent company of GCH Retail.

MRCB has also constructed 12 Giant outlets in locations throughout Malaysia, valued at over RM500 million, with the latest, a RM52 million outlet in Setapak, set to be delivered this month.
