Melaka Gateway as part of the new global consumer silk road?

MELAKA: The Melaka Gateway project is vital to the realisation of China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the project will have a marina, a terminal for cruise vessels and deep sea port as well as other developments that could boost the area's economy.

"This shows Malaysia is not only supporting the initiative but also has programmes and projects that could benefit both nations," he said at a press conference here on Saturday.

Earlier, he and China's Transport Minister Yang Chuantang visited the Melaka Gateway project site at Pulau Melaka.

The RM40 billion project, covering 616.59 acres on three man-made islands and comprising luxury residences, shopping malls, office spaces and recreational areas besides port and marina, is expected to be ready in 2025.

The 'One Belt, One Road' initiative comprises the 21st Century Maritime Silk Route Economic Belt and the historic Silk Road.

Liow said his ministry has in principle appproved the construction of a deep sea port and marine park on the project's third island.

Malaysia is hoping China will support the project with expertise, technology and investments, he said.

"We also hope to create a win-win port alliance with ports in China to further enhance the management system for cruise and container vessels," he added.
