PETALING JAYA (Sept 29): The managing director of WCT Holdings Bhd, Taing Kim Hwa, was named CEO of the Year at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2016 organised by the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB).

“I am incredibly humbled by this honour from CIDB, the industry’s foremost organisation that is tasked to develop a world-class construction industry in Malaysia.

“To be singularly recognised by the esteem panel of judges means a lot to me and our company. WCT’s success can be attributed to the support, hardwork and commitment of our employees. I am thrilled to accept this award on their behalf,” said Taing in a statement.

“WCT has accomplished numerous achievements and surpassed many significant milestones to reach where we are today. This achievement is made even sweeter as WCT is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year,” added Taing.

In the late 70s, Wong Chew Lai, Wong Sewe Wing, Chan Soon Huat and Taing founded WCT Earthworks and Building Contractors Sdn Bhd, a construction company focused primarily in stripping overburden with the use of heavy equipment like excavators and wheel loaders for tin mining companies.

WCT Earthworks and Building Contractors then ventured into general construction via the Selangor Turf Club infrastructure project in 1992, due to the waning mining industry.

“Taing had successfully led the company to weather through the construction downtime during the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis by securing the RM302 million Sepang F1 International Circuit project. This was also the turning point of WCT in the construction sector,” said WCT.

Under Taing’s leadership, WCT has achieved a market capitalisation of RM2 billion as of today and has received multiple awards from past MCIEA for its projects such as the International Achievement Award in 2010 for Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Contractor of the Year Award in 2010 for the Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Sabah; International Achievement Award in 2004 for the Bahrain International Circuit in Bahrain; Builder of the Year in 2002 and Special Project Award in 2001 for Sepang F1 International Circuit in Selangor.

“WCT will continue to stay relevant and deliver the best of its expertise and products by leveraging on our 35 years of engineering and construction track record.

“We will also expand quality land bank and create a balanced property development profile,” he added.
