Mah Sing orang asli

PETALING JAYA (July 25): Mah Sing Foundation, a charitable trust established by Mah Sing Group Bhd, has contributed RM42,000 to build a home for an orang asli family in Kampung Serendah via social enterprise EPIC Homes.

The home, which measures 650 sq ft and includes a foyer, two bedrooms with doors, kitchen, ceiling storage and living room, was built from scratch over three days by 39 volunteers — including Mah Sing’s employees.

The volunteers of the project attended a builders basic workshop a week prior to the actual build. The training included familiarisation with equipment and tools, learning building skills, and understanding the process of the build.

“We are very happy to see our staff volunteering for this worthy cause. As a premier lifestyle property developer, working with EPIC Homes to build a house for an underprivileged family is a very meaningful task to us. We hope the new house owners will be able to have a comfortable and safe place they can call home,” Mah Sing group managing director Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum noted in a statement.

“Mah Sing Foundation has been actively providing financial assistance to the underprivileged within our community to help raise their standards of living, and we are honoured to be involved in this project,” said Mah Sing Foundation chairman Datuk Syed Norulzaman Syed Kamarulzaman.

“We would like to commend EPIC Homes for its good work in bringing people together and empowering them to make a positive impact in their community.”

Aside from building a safe home for orang asli families, the project aims to foster relationship between the volunteers and the families.

It allows the volunteers to better understand the struggles, needs and challenges faced by the families.

EPIC Homes’ work includes training the public to build homes for rural communities, rebuilding for flood victims, providing solutions for non-structural needs, engaging in master planning for community development, and training others to identify the needs of underprivileged communities and in disaster relief.

To date, EPIC Homes has built over 86 homes across Malaysia.
