IPOH (July 25): The Ipoh City Council (MBI) is not proposing to raise car parking charges in the city unlike the move implemented by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

On the other hand, Ipoh mayor Datuk Zamri Man said the council is studying the overall parking management operations for a more systematic structure.

“Increasing the rate is not in our study. This means the existing rate stays for Ipoh.

“The study is more towards a new system to facilitate the public’s use of parking amenities such as online payment as Ipoh is still using the coupon system,” he told reporters when attending a car-free day programme here yesterday.

Currently, MBI charges 30 sen for half an hour, 60 sen for an hour and RM4 for one day of usage of parking bays under its jurisdiction.

On the programme yesterday, Zamri said there is a growing response from the public to various activities to promote a healthier lifestyle.

“Based on MBI records, the programme, which was held for the ninth time today (yesterday), attracted more than 6,000 participants from about 2,000 when it was first held.”

He said the greater acceptance of the programme shows the people support the state and local governments’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the city.

For the programme, Jalan Raja Dihilir in the city centre is closed to all vehicles from 7am to 10am once a month for the people to conduct various physical activities.
