Titijaya Land confirms fatal accident at construction site in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 29): Titijaya Land Bhd reported an accident occurred on Tuesday night (Nov 28) at its purpose-built logistics facility construction site in Barat Daya, Penang, resulting in the death of a worker.

Citing its statement on Wednesday, the “tragic incident” involved foreign construction workers, however, the property developer did not disclose the details of the workers.

Earlier, Bernama reported that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) had issued an immediate stop work order to the developer, engineer and architect of the logistics warehouse construction project in Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas, which collapsed on Tuesday night.

It also reported that police have confirmed that three Bangladeshi workers were killed, while two others were seriously injured when a logistics warehouse under construction collapsed.

Titijaya said it is working closely with the contractor, the relevant authorities, and medical personnel to ensure a swift and efficient search and rescue operation.

“Titijaya understands the profound impact this tragedy has on the families of the affected workers. Their top priority now is to provide support and assistance to the grieving families, and they request privacy and respect for the grieving families during this challenging time,” it said.

In the meantime, all works on the site have been suspended until further notice.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of the construction workers. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased workers and our sincere concern for the injured,” Titijaya group managing director Datuk Lim Poh Yit said.

He said that the group has reached out to the families of the victims, and attended to those who have been hospitalised and will cooperate with those involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, a thorough investigation into the incident will be conducted once the search and rescue operation is complete.

"If any human error or negligence is found to have contributed to this tragedy, we will take firm and decisive action. Updates on the investigation will be provided as new information becomes available," he said.

Shares in Titijaya Land was up half a sen to 25.5 sen on Wednesday, valuing the company at RM341.3 million.
