CIDB launches IBS Homes Catalogue and IBS Homes Showhouses initiative

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has launched two initiatives under the industralised building system (IBS), which are IBS Homes Catalogue and IBS Homes showhouses to encourage adoption of IBS in Malaysia in the affordable housing landscape. These were launched at the opening ceremony of BINA 2023 Conference at CIDB Convention Centre on Tuesday (Aug 8).

In a press statement, CIDB chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid said in his welcome address, “The launch of IBS Homes and IBS Homes Catalogue marks a turning point in the construction industry. It showcases our relentless pursuit of excellence and our unyielding commitment to building a sustainable and technologically advanced nation. Our dedication to streamlining processes and embracing cutting-edge solutions has resulted in a revolution that reverberates far beyond the confines of these walls.”

The IBS Homes Catalogue features 46 standard house designs that can be constructed using different IBS systems for single to double-storey terrace houses, townhouses, bungalows and apartments. These designs meet the Local Government Development Ministry (KPKT) guidelines and requirements, which can be accessed through the CIDB SMART Portal.

Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who launched the IBS Homes Catalogue initiative, said: "The IBS Homes Catalogue stands as a milestone achievement in the pursuit of providing affordable housing solutions for citizens. This momentous occasion celebrates the culmination of the efforts in driving digital commercialisation through IBS.”

Five sample showhouses from the IBS Homes Catalogue were also unveiled and can be viewed at the CIDB Complex in Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Cheras. To visit, pre-bookings have to be made through CIDB IBS Sdn Bhd. The sample houses were constructed using the interlocking hollow block system, precast concrete system, metal framing system, hollow core precast concrete system and 3D printing.

The press statement said that the implementation of IBS increased in 2021 for both governmental and private projects at 84% and 60% respectively, compared to the previous year with 79.5% and 41%. This improvement is attributed to the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020, the Construction 4.0 Strategic Plan 2021-2025 and the National Construction Policy (NCP) 2030. These initiatives promote the use of technology and to elevate construction standards.

Looking ahead, the NCP 2030 aims for a 10.3% growth in the construction sector and a higher technology adoption. Specifically, the policy aims to achieve 100% utilisation of IBS with a 70 score and reducing dependency on manual labour.

There are currently 118 IBS suppliers that cover all types of IBS systems. Some construction companies have developed their own IBS technology and manufacturing facilities such as IJM Corp Bhd, Gamuda, S P Setia Bhd, Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd, Sunway Bhd, LBS Bina Group Bhd and Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd.

BINA 2023 witnessed the exchange of a memorandum of collaboration (MoC) between CIDB IBS Sdn Bhd and CIBC Technology Sdn Bhd, to develop IBS product modules with IBS Ware and e-Build marketplace platform. This module will be a collaborative space for buyers and sellers within the construction community to encourage efficiency, seamless connectivity and growth opportunities for stakeholders.
