BATU PAHAT (Dec 7): A 41-year-old computer shop technician here has been slapped with more than RM47,000 worth of unpaid electricity bills and he has no idea how he used up so much power.

Kuan Chin Ee told The Star that he had always paid his power bills on time and “was only told about the amount earlier this month”.

“My maid told me that two Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) officers had persuaded her to let them take a look at my meter.

“They opened the meter and took some photos before telling my maid to inform me to go to the TNB office,” Kuan explained.

“TNB staff claim that I have made changes to the meter but I have never touched it,” he added.

Kuan has made a police report about the TNB officers’ visit as he felt it was not right for them to enter his house without his permission.

Johor MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon told the media that Kuan was among four TNB account holders in Yong Peng who are facing the same problem.

“The accumulated amount on the electricity bill does not make sense. Even if his bill is about RM300 a month, it will still take about 157 months to reach that amount.

“That would be about 13 years’ worth of electricity bills,” Ling said.

Johor TNB director Datuk Baderul Sham Saad told the daily that the company would investigate the matter further.

“We will look into the issue and engage with the customers involved,” he said.
